IRVINGTON, NEW YORK - On Thursday, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined students at the Main Street School within the Irvington Union Free School District for World Read Aloud Day.
World Read Aloud Day is a yearly event celebrated on the first day of February. Every year, people all around the world join together and read stories aloud with one another to advocate for literacy as a human right. This year, Senator Stewart-Cousins read the book “Fly Free!” by Roseanne Thong to a group of fifth graders. The event is facilitated by LitWorld, a nonprofit organization that works with a network of partners to ensure young people throughout the world can enjoy and appreciate reading and writing.
“Literacy is incredibly important,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “Children who have the opportunity to read regularly find greater success in their academic, professional, and personal lives. Reading empowers young people to explore their imaginations and develop their creative skills, and I’m proud to have shared this moment with these students.”
