Statement From Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins On The Passing Of Dr. Olivia Hooker

Andrea Stewart-Cousins

November 23, 2018

“As the last survivor of the Tulsa Race Riot, Dr. Olivia Hooker was a witness to one of the worst race-based massacres in our nation’s history. Dr. Hooker was a 6-year old girl who was forced to endure the trauma and horror of a mob destroying her home, murdering her neighbors, and looting and burning a community. Olivia went on to serve her nation as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, after which she made New York State her home. She worked tirelessly to pursue justice for the victims of the Tulsa Race Riot and to speak out against hate and violence.

“Dr. Hooker as a distinguished professor at Fordham University helped educate a future generation. I was proud to have her as a constituent and a friend. Her life should be an inspiration to all Americans and an example of what can be accomplished when we confront hatred and bigotry.

“I was very proud to recognize Dr. Olivia Hooker’s accomplishments and induct her into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame as well honor her on her 100th Birthday with a Senate Resolution. Dr. Olivia Hooker was an American hero, a proud New Yorker, and an example of true patriotism. It is my deepest wish that her memory be a blessing to her family, friends, and all of us.”
