As California Restores Net Neutrality, Hoylman Calls for Action on Equivalent Bill in New York

Hoylman: “States must take every measure to protect the fundamental free speech rights of consumers”

NEW YORK- Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan), sponsor of a groundbreaking bi-coastal initiative to restore net neutrality protections (S8321), released the following statement in response to California Governor Jerry Brown signing State Senator Scott Wiener’s 822 into law, which restores a free and open internet across the state of California. Senators Hoylman and Wiener first announced their bicoastal initiative to restore full net neutrality protections to one-fifth of the U.S population in December 2017.

Senator Hoylman said: “A free and fair internet is a cornerstone of our 21st-century democracy. The sentiment is unfortunately not shared by the federal government. Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, believes that big telecom corporations have the first amendment right to block or throttle any website at their discretion. States must take possible every measure to protect free speech and the rights of consumers, and California has taken a bold first step in enshrining these rights into law. New Yorkers unequivocally deserve the same protections Californians do, which is why I hope the legislature will bring my equivalent bill  S8321 to a floor vote next session.”
