Hoylman Opposes Proposed 8-Story Hotel Adjacent to Historic Merchant House at Council Hearing

NEW YORK- Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan) testified in front of the City Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchising earlier today in opposition to the proposed construction of an eight-story hotel at 27 E. 4th Street, (Application No. C170116 ZSM).
Hoylman joins Borough President Gale Brewer, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, Manhattan Community Board 2, preservationists, and residents in opposition to the current application. The proposed construction would compromise the structural integrity of the museum and pose irrevocable harm to the building
Senator Hoylman said: “The approval of this building would result in potentially irrevocable harm to the Merchant House. Furthermore, our city’s zoning laws should not be changed at the behest of a single developer, especially when the survival of a 186-year old building like the Merchant House is at stake.
It’s a miracle that the Merchant House has survived intact both inside and out for so many years. It’s our responsibility to ensure the future generations of New Yorkers are able to experience the rich history of the Merchant House. I urge the City Council to reject this application.”
