Statement from Senator Brad Hoylman on the Failure to Renew School Speed Camera Legislation
July 25, 2018
NEW YORK, NY - Today, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF - Manhattan) issued the following response to the Senate’s failure to renew and expand New York City’s life-saving school-zone speed camera program. The cameras, which monitor dozens of intersections in New York City, will turn off at 5:30 P.M. today if Senate Republicans refuse to act.
“Today will go down as a dark day for the New York Senate, when the Republican leadership abdicated its solemn responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of our children by not returning to Albany to renew the school speed camera legislation.
Speed cameras save kids’ lives and the Republicans know it. Rather than stand up for decency and common sense, the spineless Republican leadership crumpled under pressure from the narrow-minded and extreme views of only a couple of Senators. But the blame is on the entire Republican conference and I’m certain that angry parents like me aren’t going to forget their outrageous dereliction of duty anytime soon, especially before November.”
