November 27, 2018
NEW YORK- Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan), released the following statement in response to the election of Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins as the next Majority Leader of the New York State Senate:
Senator Hoylman said: “As of January, Albany’s ‘three men in a room’ will be no more. I’m extremely proud to have cast my vote for Andrea Stewart-Cousins to be the first woman to lead a legislative chamber in New York State. Leader Stewart-Cousins has proven to be a skillful, collaborative and principled Democratic Conference Leader who has demonstrated she is the best person to lead the entire State Senate. I look forward to working with her to pass the progressive legislation that has been blocked by Senate Republicans for decades.”
Stewart-Cousins is the first woman and first African-American woman to lead a legislative chamber in Albany. To signify her historic new role, Senator Hoylman presented Leader Stewart-Cousins with a piece of shattered glass from the renovated ceiling at the Javits Center in his Senate district (see attached photos).
