Marcellino Announces $500,000 Grant for Oyster Bay Downtown Improvement Project

Oyster Bay, NY – New York State Senator Carl Marcellino joined with Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Chamber of Commerce President Ryan Schlotter in announcing a $500,000 grant for improvements in the downtown Oyster Bay business district.  Earlier this year, the Town of Oyster Bay applied for State funding to create a safe and inviting environment for residents and visitors to enjoy the area’s commercial and recreational opportunities. 

Senator Marcellino stated, “Downtown Oyster Bay is the heart of our north shore community and I’m proud to deliver funding for much needed improvements.  This project will extend the streetscape and crosswalk work westerly along Audrey Avenue in order to provide a common-themed connection to Fireman’s Field, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, and the Western Waterfront.  These improvements will help attract customers to downtown businesses, create jobs and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents who visit our downtown.”

The Oyster Bay Downtown Improvement Project includes the installation of decorative paver crosswalks to replace the existing painted crosswalks.  These crosswalks allow for a continuation of a visual theme in place on the sidewalks, and create a safe zone for pedestrians that motorists can both see and feel which should encourage lower speeds.  Additionally, the Town will install new infrastructure to support the bicycling community.  As Oyster Bay is a destination for bicyclists, a covered bicycle racks area will be installed so riders can take a break from their rides to enjoy the sites of Oyster Bay without worrying about the security of their bikes. 

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay implemented streetscape improvements in some areas of the downtown, installing decorative lighting and brick paver strips along the curb line.  With this assistance from Senator Marcellino, we will install decorative paver crosswalks at all intersections and replace the existing painted crosswalks.  This project will help beautify our downtown and create a safe zone for pedestrians and bicyclists that motorists can both see and feel which should encourage lower speeds.  Thank you Senator Marcellino for delivering for our community.”

The success of this project will provide a consistent theme for the Oyster Bay downtown area infrastructure which will be easily identifiably to pedestrians and motorists.  This project will create a safer environment for pedestrians which shall encourage walking within the downtown area, enhancing the economic opportunities for downtown businesses.  By linking the large parking facility at Fireman’s Field, visitors to the downtown area will be provided with a central starting point to enjoy shopping, get a bite to eat, and take in the beautiful view of Oyster Bay Harbor.
