Round Three New NY Broadband Grants Will Accomplish Goal of Statewide Access
March 2, 2018
“In the 21st century, broadband is the cornerstone of economic development, education, health care, public safety and virtually every aspect of modern life. For years, we’ve been striving to expand broadband access to rural areas like ours which have traditionally been underserved.
With the news that $32.6 million in New NY Broadband Round 3 grants are on their way to Western New York, we are realizing the critical goal of achieving access for all New Yorkers. The $500 million in capital investment that we supported in the 2015-16 budget for this program has been the vehicle for this landmark achievement. When the program launched, just 70 percent of New Yorkers had broadband coverage with some upstate regions having as little as 35 percent coverage. In just three years, that connectivity gap has been closed, thanks to the commitment of the Governor and my legislative colleagues on this issue. This is a victory that will pay immeasurable dividends in the years to come, helping our rural communities to not only survive, but thrive.”
Phase III funding from the New NY Broadband Program will provide grant funding of over $23 million to Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.
