October 24, 2018
Senator Phillips has announced the Hicksville Water District has been granted $162,330 from the $2.5 billion Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017.
“Protecting our water resources on Long Island is of great importance and I am pleased the Hicksville Water District is the recipient of this important grant,” said Senator Phillips. “The Hicksville Water District will work in partnership with Stony Brook Center for Clean Water Technology on a pilot program to provide scientific results that the Advanced Oxidation Processing (AOP) technology could be used to target 1,4 dioxane and other volatile organics. ”
“The Hicksville Water District is grateful to Senator Elaine Phillips for helping to support the vital treatment of these emerging contaminants.” said Karl Schweitzer, Chairman of the Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners. “Senator Elaine Phillips worked tirelessly with our District and her colleagues in state legislature to help ensure these funds would be available. These funds will provide critical backing to support the establishment of proven water treatment infrastructure and lessen the cost of the local taxpayers.”
The Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017 seeks to invest $2.5 billion in clean and drinking water projects and water quality protection across New York State. Of the $2.5 billion, $200 million of the funding was dedicated to address and test emerging contaminants. The emerging contaminant funding will flow through the same process as New York State WIIA and IMG for purposes of awarding grants. The Clean Water Infrastructure Act's WIIA grants provide at least $1 billion for the New York State WIIA, which assists municipalities in funding water quality infrastructure. The awarded grant money from New York State and Stony Brook University will support the implementation of a pilot program for AOP and the necessary fees associated with determining this program’s feasibility, including an expansive docket of testing.
