Senator Elaine Phillips welcomed the 2018 Hicksville Youth Council's Boys & Girls Club’s ‘Youth of the Year’ winner, Sean Michael Joyce, to the State Capital today to congratulate him on his many achievements and commitment to the local community.

As the Youth of the Year, Sean was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Boys & Girl’s Club, his academic achievements, and overall contributions to the community, as well as his perseverance in overcoming personal challenges and obstacles.

Sean Michael Joyce has spoken out against bullying and offered tutorship and guidance to his younger peers within the club. He is also a member of the Club’s “Power Hour” program dedicated to allocating an organized schedule to focus on schoolwork as well as the Club’s yearly Food Drives, National Kids Day, and Open Gym program.

“At an early age Sean learned that life can be difficult at times and that by building others up and leading by example provides a positive pathway to future success in all facets of life," Senator Phillips said. "He is the epitome of a youth leader and his commitment and dedication to help others and to be a role model among his peers is truly commendable.   Congratulations to Sean, and thank you to Hicksville Boys and Girls Club and Director Tom Bruno for all that you do in our local community.”

Senator Phillips presented Sean with a legislative resolution she sponsored, which was passed by the Senate, in recognition of his accomplishment.

Sean has been a member of the honor roll and principal’s list throughout high school and plans on attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he hopes to participate in the ROTC program and major in military science.
