(BRONX, NY) Senator Jamaal T. Bailey hosted an Opioid Awareness Workshop on Saturday, April 28th at the Oval Park Recreation Center. The workshop included participation from the Oval Park Recreation Center, Congress Member Adriano Espaillat, Assembly Member Jeffrey Dinowitz, Assembly Member Nathalia Fernandez, and Council Member Andrew Cohen to disseminate information regarding opioid usage and substance abuse support within the Bronx community.
The 52nd Precinct, which covers the Norwood section of the 36th Senatorial District, has the highest level of opioid abuse in the Bronx. Out of the five boroughs, the Bronx has the highest opioid-related overdose rates. The goal of this event was to address the high rates of opioid abuse in the Bronx, by allowing community organizers and elected officials to engage with constituents and share knowledge with them pertaining to the epidemic.
"Opioid abuse has plagued our community for a long time. I am glad to see measures being taken in order to address this crucial issue in the legislature. Ensuring that residents are informed on the different resources available is a priority in order to finally put an end to this epidemic," said Senator Jamaal T. Bailey.
Saturday, April 28th was also the Drug Enforcement Agency's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nation-wide event aimed at educating the public about possible misuse of prescription medication as well as providing a safe and convenient environment for medication disposal.
