ALBANY, 05/16/18 – State Senators John Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) and James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref–Oneonta) today proudly welcomed the Delaware Academy High School Girls Basketball team and their coach Todd Bruce to Albany where they were honored during the senate session as the 2018 New York State Class D champions.
Senator John Bonacic said, “I’m pleased to join with my colleagues today in recognizing the outstanding achievements of the Delaware Academy Girls Varsity Basketball Team in winning the Class D State Championship. I extend congratulations to coach Todd Bruce and all the players for their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence required to accomplish this tremendous feat. You have all made Delaware County proud.”
Senator James L. Seward said, “The Delaware Academy Girls Basketball team is made up of true trailblazers – capturing the school’s first state basketball title and the first state title in any girl’s sport. Winning a state championship is an impressive feat that the players, coaches, and the entire Delhi community can be proud of and will always remember. The girls also excel in the classroom and truly epitomize the term student-athlete. The players are terrific role models for other students, young players who look up to them, and the community at-large.”
Delaware Academy defeated previously unbeaten Franklinville 54-51 in overtime to capture the New York State Class D championship on March 18, 2018 capping a 24-2 season.
The New York State Legislature adopted a legislative resolution honoring the Delaware Academy Girls Basketball team that reads in part:
“Coach Todd Bruce and all of the outstanding athletes on the Delaware Academy Varsity Girls Basketball Team have clearly utilized dedication, determination and teamwork in providing a lasting contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school.”
Senators Bonacic and Seward sponsored senate resolution J4327, which was adopted on March 27, 2018. Assemblyman Brian Miller sponsored an identical resolution, assembly resolution K969, which was adopted on March 28, 2018.
The Delaware Academy Girls Basketball team was also recently named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Team for classroom excellence.
