Sanders Hosts DOF to Provide Free Property Tax Exemption Assistance to Constituents
November 20, 2018
Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) partnered with the NYC Department of Finance to host a free property tax exemption assistance event at his District Office in South Ozone Park on November 16, 2018. Representatives from the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) were also on hand to provide help in remedying cases of property fraud. This event is the first part of a four-part event series that will also include help to reduce utility bills.
The DOF was able to help a handful of veterans receive a military specific tax exemption resulting from their time in the service. Also many constituents who had never enrolled in a property tax exemption program were able to receive application assistance which may result in multiple exemptions. Some qualified for the Enhanced Star exemption which provides a $600 reduction annually. Through this event at Senator Sanders' Office, NYLAG was able to help one person who had been the victim of foreclosure fraud and another who had experienced deed theft, while also helping with other issues.
"These are very important services for our community and I am proud to partner with the DOF and NYLAG to bring these resources close to home so that more people have access to them," Sanders said. "In these tough economic times every bit of savings helps, and under those conditions we will continue to have events like these to benefit all who are in need."
