On Halloween, New York State Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan and Senator Carl Marcellino, joined by costumed children, community members and Long Island YMCA leadership, delivered a $1 million treat to the Huntington YMCA for emergency repairs to its pool that was in danger of closing due to structural issues.
The Norton pool is a community gem that draws babies, young athletes and senior citizens to its waters. It serves 165 children on the Y’s swim team, the Bluefins, and local high schools including Huntington, South Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Harbor Fields and Commack practice in its waters. Seniors enjoy the therapeutic benefits, infants as young as six months take classes and teens take lifeguard training courses at the Norton pool.
But the Huntington Y learned that the southwest wall of the pool, constructed in 1955, had structural damage and needs to be replaced, along with other critical repairs in the pool area. Without the immediate action from Majority Leader Flanagan and Senator Marcellino, the pool would have been forced to close.
“The YMCA is a central gathering place for families and our young athletes who rely on the pool for practices, exercise and learning. I am proud to deliver for the Long Island YMCA and all of Long Island’s families,” said Majority Leader Flanagan.
“I’m proud to deliver immediate results to keep the Norton Pool and its programs afloat. The $1 million I secured will make sure that our families, and especially our children, can continue to enjoy this gem, practice for their swim meets and take a class to save a life,” said Senator Marcellino.
“Senator Carl Marcellino and Majority Leader John Flanagan have both been incredible advocates for the YMCA of Long Island, our region and the State. The Huntington and Glen Cove YMCAs are uniquely positioned to better serve our members of all ages due to the Senators’ continued heroic support,” said Anne N. Brigis, President & CEO, YMCA of Long Island.
