Sen. Griffo presents Liberty Medal to Timothy Corey

At a special ceremony today, state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-I-C-Rome, presented a New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Timothy Corey for the heroic actions that the Yorkville resident took to help save a child’s life.
On March 19, Corey, a lieutenant with the state Department of Corrections in Marcy, was on vacation in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when he and another man were approached by a woman who claimed a young boy was stuck in an outdoor pool intake pipe. Corey quickly ran to the pool and observed another man frantically diving under water to breathe air into the boy’s mouth. 
Corey then jumped into the pool and began helping the child. For approximately eight minutes, Corey and his fellow rescuer breathed air into the victim’s mouth. After freeing the boy from the pipe, emergency responders performed CPR, removed water from the child’s lungs and rushed him to a nearby hospital. 
“Due to the life-saving actions of Timothy and the other rescuers, the boy was released from the hospital after six days of treatment,” Sen. Griffo said. “Through his actions that day, Timothy demonstrated his true character and a genuine compassion for the well-being of others. He is very deserving of this special recognition and should be regarded as a true hero.”
The Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors a New Yorker can receive. It is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
