Why: Residents of New York City are facing exorbitant fines for overdue toll charges from the newly implemented cashless toll collection systems on NYC area bridges and tunnels. After less than three months of being past due, some drivers have reported fines as high as $100 for tolls as small as $8.50. While the MTA should discourage late payment of toll obligations, many of these recent fines are unreasonably steep and unfair because motorists were not given sufficient notice of their penalties.

State Senator Comrie, the American Motorists Association, and NYC drivers are calling on the MTA to enact an amnesty program, with outreach components, for commuters who have received penalties following the implementation of cashless tolling on MTA Bridges and Tunnels throughways; to enact a publicly disclosed, consumer friendly fee waiver policy; and to lower the amount of fees that can be charged to a driver.
