GENEVA – This week, Senator Pam Helming's legislation to ensure that all American flags purchased by the State of New York are manufactured in the United States of America passed the Senate. Senator Helming's legislation passed with overwhelming, unanimous bipartisan support.
“As a member of a military family, I have a deeply-held sense of pride every time I see the American flag flying high above our state capitol. The American flag serves not only as a symbol of freedom and hope for countless people around the world, but also as a reminder here at home of the many sacrifices our brave servicemen and women have made on behalf of our great nation. It is sad to think a symbol of such meaning and honor could be made anywhere other than right here on American soil. I thank my colleagues in the Senate for putting politics aside to support this meaningful legislation and hope the Assembly will follow suit,” Senator Helming said.
The American flag is one of the most universally recognized symbols representing the United States and the principles and freedoms upon which it was founded. It is estimated New York spends nearly $3.6 million every year on United States flags produced in other countries. This bill would ensure that all United States flags purchased by New York State are made in the United States.
The bill has been sent to the Assembly for their consideration.
Senator Helming represents the 54th Senate District, which consists of Seneca and Wayne Counties, parts of Cayuga and Ontario Counties, and the towns of Lansing and Webster. For more information, please visit Senator Helming’s website, or follow @SenatorHelming on Facebook or Twitter.
