Senator Helming Honors 50th Anniversary of Phelps-Clifton Springs School District
January 1, 2018
CLIFTON SPRINGS – Senator Pam Helming recognized the 50th anniversary of the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District during a Board of Education meeting at Midlakes High School on Monday, Dec. 11. She presented a proclamation to Board President Ryan Davis and Superintendent Matthew Sickles and then joined in the celebration with board members, students, and community members.
“It was truly a pleasure to attend this special ceremony. I enjoyed the opportunity to see the student performances that were part of this celebration. As we celebrate the first 50 years of the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District, we should also look ahead to the next 50 years and think about how the district can equip its students to become the next generation of citizens and leaders. Phelps-Clifton Springs – and all of the school districts throughout the Wayne-Finger Lakes region – can rest assured that I will continue to advocate on behalf of our public schools, teachers, and students. Our children are the future of our region and our state, and their education is crucial to that future. It was a pleasure to recognize this milestone and all of the district’s outstanding achievements, and I wish Superintendent Matthew Sickles, School Board President Ryan Davis, and the entire school community much success in the future,” Senator Helming said.
The Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District was formed on June 22, 1967 when voters in Phelps and Clifton Springs approved a merger between the school districts, four years after the school boards of both districts voted for the merger. A new consolidated school board was elected on July 17, 1967, and the next month, the first meeting took place and voters later approved the new school district budget. In 1968, district residents voted for a land purchase and approved spending to build Midlakes High School. Construction started in 1969, and the new high school opened on February 7, 1971. A group of students from the Phelps and Clifton Springs high schools chose the new high school’s name as well as the mascot, the Screaming Eagles.
Senator Helming represents the 54th Senate District, which consists of Seneca and Wayne Counties, parts of Cayuga and Ontario Counties, and the towns of Lansing and Webster. For more information, please visit Senator Helming’s website, or follow @SenatorHelming on Facebook or Twitter.
