Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announces six local libraries have been awarded public library construction funds. The grants are part of a $24-million state aid program for public library construction across New York, which was included in the 2017-18 State Budget.
“Libraries are such an integral part of our communities, providing services and educational resources for residents of all ages, but many of the buildings are in need of renovation,” Gallivan said. “These grants will make it possible for libraries to upgrade their facilities in order to better serve patrons and improve efficiencies.”
The following libraries within the 59th Senate District will receive funding:
- Elma Public Library - $33,518 to replace the roof & upgrade plumbing
- Arcade Free Library - $28,735 for replacement of ceiling tiles, lighting & grid work.
- Stevens Memorial Library in Attica - $32,888 to replace rubber roofs & add a generator
- Warsaw Public Library - $22,368 to restore/replace windows & upgrade electrical system
- Wyoming Free Circulating Library - $16,120 for interior renovations
- Wadsworth Library (Geneseo) - $71,019 to replace the roof & repair damaged concrete
There are approximately 1,000 public library buildings in communities across New York and more than half of them are over 60 years old. Many are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient, in need of upgrades or do not have sufficient space to meet the needs of their community.
Project activities and expenditures eligible for grants from the State Aid for Library Construction Program include financing construction of new library buildings, construction of additions to existing buildings, and the renovation and/or rehabilitation of existing space.
In the 2018-19 State Budget, the Legislature provided $34 million for projects that will be announced in summer 2019.
