Senator Gallivan Sponsors Resolution Commemorating Police Week in NY

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) sponsored a resolution approved by the New York State Senate proclaiming May 13-19, 2018 as Police Week in across the state.  The observance is in conjunction with National Police Week, established in 1962, and honors the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

“We all know that a job in law enforcement is dangerous and difficult,” Gallivan said.  “We are fortunate that despite the risk and challenges, hundreds of thousands of dedicated officers are on the job every day across the country enforcing our laws and keeping us safe. I thank those who serve and honor those who have fallen.”

Senator Gallivan is a former New York State Trooper and former Sheriff of Erie County.

There are roughly 900,000 law enforcement officers serving communities across the United States.  In 2017, 128 officers were killed in the line of duty and had their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Since the first recorded death in 1791, more than 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty.
