State Senator Patty Ritchie has delivered $50,000 in state funding to help the Town of Oswego make significant upgrades to its Community Center that include making the building ADA compliant and creating a museum to share the story of its long history.
“A town is only as strong as its residents. A community center is a place that brings people together for not only meetings, but also to build community spirit and a sense of pride. I am proud to have secured this funding, which will help people feel a sense of pride in the place they call ‘home,’ and tell the story of the Town of Oswego’s fascinating history.”
The Town of Oswego acquired a local church’s Community Center in 2015 after the church ended services. In addition to making the building ADA compliant, the funding secured by Senator Ritchie will allow the town to upgrade the building’s heating system.
“A viable Community Center is essential to the wellbeing of the community. This important and timely grant from Senator Ritchie will allow the Town of Oswego to make this available to more members of the community. It is heartening to realize the importance Senator Ritchie gives to improving the health and wellbeing of her constituents,” Town of Oswego Supervisor Richard Kaulfuss said.
This year, the Town of Oswego is celebrating its 200th anniversary. One of its most famous, and impactful residents that will be highlighted in the Community Center museum is Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Mary Walker. Dr. Walker is the only female to ever receive this highest of honors. Dr. Walker was instrumental in encouraging women to become involved in their communities and highlighting the vital role women play in our society.
