State Senator Patty Ritchie is announcing she has secured $75,000 to help the Village of Carthage move forward with repairs to Guyots Island, as well as to make handicapped accessible improvements to its municipal building.
“Projects like these are so important to improving the quality of life in communities across our region,” said Senator Ritchie. “I am pleased to have been able to deliver this funding, which will help protect the future of Guyots Island and the recreational opportunities it provides, as well as improve accessibility at the Village’s municipal building.”
“We are extremely fortunate that Senator Ritchie agreed that these projects were important and provided the funding to complete them,” said G. Wayne McIlroy, President of the Village of Carthage’s Board of Trustees. “The Village Board of Trustees and local residents are extremely grateful to Senator Ritchie for her commitment and dedication to our village and the State of New York.”
In the spring of 2014, extreme flooding caused significant damage to Carthage’s historic Guyots Island, which has a park that provides recreational opportunities to residents and visitors. The park was built around the archaeological ruins that remain from a time when Guyots Island was home to several industrial plants, including the National Paper Tissue plant and Carthage Iron Works.
Of the funding secured by Senator Ritchie, $50,000 will help the village build a rock barrier around the island—known as riprap—to help keep water from encroaching onto the island.
In addition, $25,000 in funding also helped the Village of Carthage improve its municipal building, including the installation of handicap accessible doors.
