ALBANY, NY -- Today, State Senator Shelley B. Mayer (D-37) was appointed as the Ranking Democratic Member on the NYS Senate Education Committee. Senator Mayer was sworn into the State Senate on April 30th after a decisive victory in a special election for the 37th Senate District on April 24, 2018.
"I am honored to be appointed as the Ranking Democratic Member on the NYS Senate Education Committee, and I thank Democratic Conference Leader Stewart Cousins for placing her confidence in me," said State Senator Shelley Mayer. "Delivering for our public school children is one of my top priorities. Serving in a leadership role on the Education Committee will allow me to best serve the public schools in the 37th Senate District. Spanning from Bedford to Yonkers, the district has diverse educational needs and challenges. I look forward to working with my fellow lawmakers, parents, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders to advocate for the best educational practices and ensure that all public schools have the resources they need to provide a quality education."
Ranking Democratic Member on the Education Committee is Senator Mayer's first leadership role in the State Senate. While in the Assembly, Senator Mayer served as Chair of the Committee on Oversight, Analysis, and Investigation; Chair of the Assembly Task Force on Women's Issues; Chair of the Education Committee's Subcommittee on Students with Special Needs; as well being an active member of the Committees on Children & Families, Cities, Education, Labor, and Social Services.
