ALBANY, NY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) released the following statement regarding her vote this morning on bill S. 8121:
“Let me be clear: protecting victims of domestic violence has long been—and will remain—one of my highest priorities and I wholeheartedly support the intent behind this legislation. However, I am utterly disgusted that once again, in the dark of night, critically important policy was rushed through the legislature without full consideration. This is a critically flawed process designed to fail, and in this case I worry that at its worst, this process may fail the victims that it intends to help.
“Domestic violence is a personal issue for me, and measures aimed at protecting victims deserve our full and undivided attention. Our laws must be developed transparently in partnership with advocates, law enforcement, and most importantly through victims.
“My constituents are tired of this broken system. New Yorkers deserve better.”
