A Labor Of Love: Senator Murphy's Bill Designates Span As Westchester County Workers Memorial Bridge

Albany, NY - Working men and women built our cities and towns, have transported goods throughout the region, and paved the roads we drive on. Now, thanks to a bill introduced by Senator Terrence Murphy, they will have a landmark dedicated in their honor.
Senator Murphy's bill, S5580B, designates a portion of the Croton Reservoir Bridge consisting of the southbound lanes of the Taconic Parkway as the "Westchester County Workers Memorial Bridge." The section of the Bridge encompassing the northbound lanes will continue to be known as the AMVETS Memorial Bridge."
"It was time we recognized the people who put their blood and sweat into every brick, rivet, and slab of concrete. Dedicating a section of the bridge to honor the workers who built our great state was a no-brainer," said Senator Murphy. "Thousands of people travel across this span on a daily basis. I think they will be proud to know a portion of the bridge will be dedicated to the type of hard-working men and women whose ancestors may have built it."
Thomas Carey, Westchester-Putnam Central Labor Body AFL-CIO said, "It is phenomenal to have a bridge named in honor of union workers. Senator Murphy has been a friend of labor since he was elected. This bridge will honor the hard work and sacrifices made by our members and will be a symbol of our unity and accomplishments."
"It is extraordinary that Senator Murphy took the initiative to recognize the history and continued hard work of the labor movement," said Louis Picani, President of Teamsters Local 456. "Our men and women do not work for the recognition but they now have a tangible tribute that honors their efforts."
Built in 1931 and reconstructed in 1989, the arch style bridge, once known as the New Croton Reservoir Bridge, spans a total length of 960 feet. The refurbishment of the bridge was part of a $26 million project, which included steel hangers and deck supports, concrete bridge deck and railing; installing new guide rail; and resurfacing the roadway on each end of the bridge.
