Senator Bill Larkin (R,C,I-Cornwall-on-Hudson) this week met with North Rockland school officials to discuss the district’s massive Mirant (tax certiorari) debt. Senator Larkin, who secured $4 million in special grants for the district last year, is working with stakeholders to find a long-term solution that benefits both the school district and taxpayers.
“I have always believed that sitting down with all parties involved and having an open discussion is the best way to tackle any issue,” said Senator Bill Larkin. Throughout this year’s state budget negotiations, I will be working to find ways to keep this funding in the classroom, benefitting both students and taxpayers.”
“The Mirant case has left our school district and our property taxpayers crippled,” said Stony Point Deputy Supervisor Tom Basile. “With a $1 million per month burden, we need to find a long-term sustainable solution that finally helps taxpayers while ensuring our children receive the highest quality education. Action over words are what we need, and I look forward to working further with Senator Larkin and the school district to address this problem and enhance everyone’s quality of life.”
“We applaud Senator Larkin’s efforts to help offset the cost to the Haverstraw North Rockland taxpayer and we continue to support his efforts to reduce the school property taxes so that our children can have an excellent education at an affordable price,” stated Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips.
The North Rockland CSD currently pays $12 million annually on this debt, and is scheduled to continue payment for the next 20 years.
