Senator Larkin Secures $235,000 for Women's Health, Wellness and Safety
June 20, 2018
Senator Bill Larkin (R,C, I-39th District) has secured a total of $235,000 in funding for the Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center, Safe Homes of Orange County and Cornerstone Family Healthcare. This funding will be a combination of the State and Municipal Facilities (SAM) grant program as well as a new funding program created by the Senate that supports women’s health, cancer services and women’s general wellness and safety.
“I am proud that my colleagues in the Senate and I were able to secure funding for women’s health, safety and wellness programs,” said Senator Bill Larkin. “These organizations do tremendous work on behalf of women throughout the Hudson Valley and I believe that providing them the resources they need to maximize their success is exactly what we should be doing as legislators.”
Safe Homes of Orange County will receive a $50,000 SAM grant to be used for major renovations to their current shelter used to house women who have been victims of domestic violence. Safe Homes will also receive a women’s general wellness and safety grant in the amount of $60,000 for vital domestic violence programs.
“Safe Homes of Orange County is grateful to Senator Larkin for this critical funding which will be used to support direct services and prevention and education for victims and children of domestic violence, dating violence and human trafficking in Orange County,” said Kellyann Kostyal-Larrier, Executive Director of Safe Homes of Orange County. “The capital monies secured to renovate our current 17 bed facility will be transformative. Last year alone, we provided 5,322 bed nights serving 66 adults and 45 children. The shelter experiences high traffic and the need is great. The renovations will address critical wear and tear from over the years, and update cabinetry and appliances to support survivors and their children for years to come.”
Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center will receive a $25,000 women’s health-cancer services grant to support a number of important education and outreach programs including free cancer survivorship programs for both cancer patients and their families.
“Senator Larkin continues to show his unwavering commitment to women and their families who fight cancer every day,” said Casey MacDonald, Executive Director of the Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center. “This funding will help educate our cancer patients and their families by providing free programs with specialists from comprehensive cancer centers throughout the region. We currently rely 100% on fundraising for our operations and this grant will allow us to double our efforts and our impact on women throughout the Hudson Valley.”
Cornerstone Family Healthcare will receive a $100,000 grant to assist in their efforts to provide quality healthcare to residents throughout the Hudson Valley.
“Providing state of the art healthcare to Hudson Valley residents, especially those who are most in need is something Senator Larkin has supported with great enthusiasm over the last several decades,” said Linda Muller, President and CEO of Cornerstone Family Healthcare. “With this grant we will be able to enhance our existing services and better the overall quality of healthcare our patients and their families have come to depend on.”
