Statement From Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins
Andrea Stewart-Cousins
February 14, 2019
“A year ago today, 17 innocent students and teachers were murdered, and another 17 were injured in an act of senseless brutality. Since then, we have seen young adults throughout the country rise up, demand action, and work to protect students, families, and communities from the scourge of gun violence.
My heart continues to ache for the lives lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, and on this painful anniversary, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and fellow students who continue to grieve. No one should have to worry about being shot in their classroom, in a movie theater, in a mall, or on the street.
That is why we need to pass meaningful gun safety legislation and stay vigilant to confront gun violence. Under the new Senate Democratic Majority, New York State has taken major steps to address gun safety, and I hope more states follow our lead on this critical issue.”
