November 25, 2019
Brooklyn, NY– This week, Senator Andrew Gounardes is partnering with local Scout Stephen Johnson to roll out ten “Little Libraries” across the community. Johnson, currently a Life Scout in Troop 715, conceived of the idea to organize a used book drive and build boxes for the books as part of his service to ascend to the rank of Eagle Scout. Senator Gounardes and Johnson have collected community donations of hundreds of gently used books to fill the Little Libraries, which will be opening shortly for public enjoyment at the following locations:
- Senator Gounardes’ District Office - 8018 Fifth Ave
- Gabriel Pediatrics - 77th and 4th ave
- Council Member Justin Brannan & Congressman Max Rose Shared District Office - 8203 Third Ave
- The Art Room
- FIAO Il Centro
- UCA (United Chinese Association)
- Holy Cross Orthodox Church
- Michael E. Behlen Circle (Shore Road Park)
- Fort Hamilton Army Base
- Tracey Real Estate (Marine Park)
“These Little Libraries will beautify our neighborhoods and spread the joy of reading. I hope that people of all ages will enjoy the little libraries that Stephen worked so hard to bring to our community for years to come,” said State Senator Andrew Gounardes.
"The idea for my Eagle Scout project came from my mentor Demetri Gabriel. I was excited to execute it because I thought it was a great idea for our community to join in the Little Free Library movement and equally excited to have the support from Senator Gounardes. This will beautify our community as well as promote literacy and sense of community spirit as everyone is coming together dropping off so many books! Looking forward to the project coming to fruition and watching kids faces when we install them in all of the designated locations!” said Brooklyn Life Scout Stephen Johnson.
