Senator Andrew Lanza continues his partnership with Project Renewal’s Scan Van Program to provide free mammography screenings and clinical breast exams to women across Staten Island. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in New York State and until the cause and cure is found, the best tool in the fight against breast cancer is education and early detection.
Each year in New York over 15,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and over 2,600 die from the disease. A mammogram can detect breast cancer almost 24 months before it can be manually detected, facilitating earlier diagnosis and treatment, which increases the chance of survival. While great strides have been made in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer – and many diagnosed with the disease are living long, healthy lives – the fight against this deadly disease is far from over.
In the 2018-2019 State budget, Senator Lanza was able to secure an additional $5 million in new funding which has been allocated to further support ongoing women’s health initiatives such as breast cancer prevention, education, and support. With this additional funding Senator Lanza and Project Renewal are committed to educating women about the risks of breast cancer and promoting opportunities for early screenings because early detection saves lives!
