Hoylman Calls for Passage of Wage Gap Reporting Bill on Equal Pay Day

NEW YORK, NY - Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan) released the following statement calling for the passage of his S1482 in honor of Equal Pay Day, which requires the affirmative disclosure of wage gaps by companies who wish to do business with New York State:
Senator Hoylman said: “The fight for equal pay is far from over. If current economic trends continue, women can expect to achieve pay parity with their male colleagues—by 2059. Disparities are even worse for women of color, with Black and Latina women earning 57 and 49 cents respectively for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. That’s unacceptable. It’s time to make equal pay a reality for all New Yorkers and pass the legislation I sponsor with Assemblymember Glick that would require businesses who wish to do business in New York to disclose wage gaps in their employees.”
Under Hoylman’s legislation, companies with 100 more employees that want to bid on contracts with New York State would be required to submit their wage gap based on gender race, and ethnicity, using the same nine occupational categories that are used in federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission forms. Governor Cuomo signed an executive order in 2017 to require similar reporting.
