Senator Fred Akshar kicked off the third year of his district-wide “Akshar's All-Stars” student recognition program on Thursday by recognizing students at one Broome County school, one Delaware County school and two Chenango County schools.
Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers.
For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star”, Senator Akshar presents them with a t-shirt, framed certificate and a challenge coin.
At Harpursville High School, Akshar recognized Cole Marade for being a selfless young man who has shown that giving of one’s time, talent and care to others makes a huge difference. He went out of his way to make a difference in the life of an elementary student named Jaxon and forged a tremendous bond between them both. Cole has made a lasting positive impact every day as a mentor and friend to Jaxon and role model to many others.
At Afton High School, Akshar recognized senior Timothy James for his leadership and dedication to improving the lives of other students and those in the Afton community by promoting agriculture. He led the school’s food pantry by donating over 100 dozen eggs and five fresh turkeys, all while harvesting fresh vegetables and providing mentorship to younger student volunteers. Timothy has been named a New York State FFA Star Farmer and participates in many other community service activities.
At Bainbridge-Guilford High School, Akshar recognized senior Hannah Sprow for her activism and involvement in over a dozen service clubs and organizations. This year she serves as the Student Council President and a member of the New Visions Law and Government class while successfully balancing many more activities. Hannah always works to enhance Bainbridge-Guilford’s positive school culture and serves as a role model that inspires others to get involved and become active in their communities.
At DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus, Akshar recognized senior Piper Boliski for her hard work in BOCES’ Culinary Arts program and natural ability to lead by example and help others. Her classmates consistently look to her for guidance and she brings laughter and joy to her class even on their most stressful days. Piper’s been able to balance her class work with part-time employment and involvement in other school clubs and activities.
Senator Fred Akshar said, "It’s truly a unique experience to be able to shine a light on some of the amazing work and service that’s being done by young people in our community. Whether they’re spending their valuable time with younger students who need a friend or providing leadership to their fellow classmates, it’s important to recognize these bright stars and let their stories be told. In a time when the nation seems so divided, I’m happy to support such a great recognition program that shows the best in our young people.”
