Senator Fred Akshar continues “Akshar's All-Stars” student recognition program at Seton Catholic HS, Broome-Tioga BOCES, Theodore Roosevelt Elementary and Calvin Coolidge Elementary schools

Senator Fred Akshar continued the second year of his district-wide “Akshar's All-Stars” student recognition program on Friday by recognizing students at four Broome County schools.

Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers.

Last school year, Akshar recognized 30 students across school districts in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties. This year, Akshar's recognized students at Susquehanna Valley, Chenango Valley, Chenango Forks, Whitney Point, Tioga Central, Waverly, Spencer Van-Etten, Candor, Harpursville, Afton, Bainbridge-Guilford, DCMO BOCES Chenango, Windsor, Hancock, Deposit, Norwich, Valley Heights Christian Academy, Oxford, Greene, Johnson City High School, Maine-Endwell High School and Glenwood Elementary School.

For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star”, Senator Akshar presents them with a t-shirt, framed certificate and a challenge coin.

At Seton Catholic High School, Akshar recognized junior Lacey Fahs for her leadership as part of several service-oriented clubs, planning Junior Prom and organizing a volleyball tournament as a fundraiser for Seton's mission work in Haiti. A member of YES LEADs, Key Club and Smile Club, Lacey is always willing to volunteer both in and out of the classroom.

At Broome-Tioga BOCES, Akshar recognized Robert “Bobby” Frey for his hard work and determination in each of his academic, athletic and trade skill pursuits as well as his friendly and outgoing demeanor. A leader in both the Practical Application of Life Skills (PALS) Program and as an athlete in the Special Olympics, Bobby also serves as a peer tutor for others in school. He looks forward to eventually transitioning from Special Olympics athlete to coach.

At Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School, Akshar recognized 4th grader Laniya Richards for her academic excellence, stellar attendance and positive attitude. A Roosevelt Academic All Star for both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, Laniya is also a member of the Roosevelt Academic Challenge and Enrichment team. She also plays clarinet and sings in the Roosevelt Elementary chorus.

At Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, Akshar recognized Dinah Launt for her strong character, compassion and patience amongst her peers. An active student in her school community, Dinah is a member of the Odyssey of the Mind Team, the orchestra and band and she serves as a bus helper.

Senator Fred Akshar said, "This is an amazing opportunity for us to meet and recognize outstanding young people doing wonderful things in their community and schools throughout the 52nd Senate District. Whether they're in 2nd grade or a senior in high school, we want to bring attention to those students who are making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. They inspire us all by showing us the good that exists in our communities.”
