SENATOR GEORGE AMEDORE INDUCTS SCHENECTADY COUNTY RESIDENT BOB BECKER INTO NEW YORK STATE VETERANS’ HALL OF FAME

Senator George Amedore today announced the induction of Schenectady County United States Marine Corps veteran, Bob Becker, into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. The Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame honors and recognizes outstanding veterans from throughout the state who have distinguished themselves in their military service, as well as their civilian life.
“I was proud to recognize my good friend Bob Becker, not only for his distinguished service in the United States Marine Corps, but for his continued and passionate advocacy on veterans’ issues. Bob’s number one priority is improving the quality of life for our veterans. He is a familiar face at the State Capitol, and at veterans’ events in communities throughout the Capital Region,” said Senator Amedore. “1st Sergeant Becker served his nation honorably, and he continues to serve by ensuring our veterans are treated properly and receive the benefits they have earned and deserve.”
Robert Becker was born and raised in the Capital Region, where he was a member of the first graduating class of Niskayuna High School in 1959. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1960-1966 and joined the USMC Reserves in 1966, where he served until his retirement in 1982.
1st Sergeant Becker’s service to his nation and fellow veterans continued upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, as he became a passionate advocate on behalf of veterans and their families. He is the Executive Legislative Director for New York State Council of Veterans Organizations, representing more than two dozen veterans’ organizations. He is committed and focused on improving the quality of life for all of our nation’s veterans.
1st Sergeant Becker is a past National Commandant and State Commandant of the Marine Corps League, as well as past Commandant of the Electric City Detachment and the Capt. Wm. Dale O’Brien Detachment. He is the past Commander of American Legion Post 1092 and DAV Chapter 88. He has served as the President of the Schenectady County Veterans Council, where he currently serves as adjutant. He was also the National Marine Corps League Legislative Chairman for 18 years and served as Co-Chairman of the National Marine Corps League 95th Convention in Buffalo, New York.
He currently serves as the Chairman of the Rotterdam Veterans Committee and is a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, AMVETS, and the Rotterdam Elks. He is also an usher at St. Luke’s Church.
1st Sergeant Becker is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, both for his outstanding service and for his continuing advocacy on behalf of his fellow veterans. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the United States Marine Corps. He was named State and National Marine of the Year in 2011. In 1997, he was awarded the Four Chaplains Humanitarian Award and in 2018, he received the Four Chaplains Brotherhood Award.
“Bob’s efforts have had a tremendous impact and improved the lives of so many veterans throughout the state and nation. It was truly an honor to recognize all he had done for our nation and our veterans by inducting him into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame,” said Senator Amedore.
This year’s inductees were honored on Tuesday, May 21st at an induction ceremony at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
