ALBANY, 06/19/19 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation renaming a portion of New York State Route 8 in Delaware County in honor of Sidney veterans. The bill (S.6377) sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref – Oneonta) pays tribute to all veterans who have sacrificed and served our country.
“Our veterans are true heroes and it is always an honor to recognize their service and sacrifice to our nation,” said Senator Seward. “Sidney, like many of the villages and towns I represent, has a special relationship with its veterans and this new highway designation will further enhance that bond.”
Senator Seward’s bill designates a portion of New York State Route 8 running to the newly developed Sidney Veterans’ Memorial Park as the “Sidney Veterans’ Memorial Parkway”.
“Memorial highways, parks, and other landmarks serve as fitting tributes to the men and women who have given so much for our freedoms. Each time we see a sign honoring our veterans, we should think of their valor and say thank you. I am honored to play a role in adding a portion of State Route 8 in Sidney to the list of highly-worthy veteran designations and look forward to seeing the new signs erected,” Seward added.
The special highway designation was requested by the Village of Sidney.
The legislation must still be approved by the state assembly and signed by the governor to take effect.
Companion legislation (A.8223) sponsored by Assemblyman Clifford Crouch has been introduced in the state assembly.
