HOMER, 09/05/19 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref-Oneonta) today joined officials from the Town of Homer to announce a $200,000 state grant to help fund a major renovation of Homer Town Hall.
“Local elected officials, particularly in small rural towns like Homer, take painstaking efforts to balance their budgets. The goal is to provide necessary services while keeping property taxes in check,” said Senator Seward. “When major, one-time expenses materialize the task becomes even more daunting and needed projects are often neglected. That’s why I worked with the Town of Homer to secure a $200,000 grant for their town hall renovation project – meeting a crucial need without raising taxes.”
Town of Homer Supervisor Frederick Forbes Sr. said, “The people of Homer are incredibly grateful to Senator Seward for his support of the town hall renovation project. The upgrades allow us to consolidate local services from the town and village under one roof, and ensure Homer Town Hall will be here to serve future generations.”
The $200,000 capital grant secured by Senator Seward through the State and Municipal Facilities Program will help fund the $650,000 renovation of town hall. The project includes a number of upgrades to the building originally constructed in 1908. The completed project will accommodate both the town and village offices. A new assessor’s office serving the Town of Homer, the Town of Virgil, and the City of Cortland is also housed at the location.
“I am extremely pleased to partner with the Town of Homer on the town hall project that meets a demonstrated need, preserves and improves a local landmark, and won’t put a major dent in the town budget,” Seward concluded.
