ALBANY, 06/14/19 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation renaming a portion of New York State Route 205 in Otsego County in honor of United States Marine Corps Sergeant John Kempe Winslow. The bill (S.3658) sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref – Oneonta) pays tribute to the decorated patriot who was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1969.
“Every man and woman who dons a United States military uniform sacrifices for our nation and our way of life,” said Senator Seward. “Sergeant Winslow made the ultimate sacrifice and we owe it to him and his family to keep his memory alive.”
Sergeant John Kempe Winslow was a life-long resident of Hartwick and a decorated Marine who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart during his first tour. Tragically, Sergeant Winslow was killed in action on July 30, 1969
Senator Seward’s bill designates the portion of New York State Route 205 running through the Hamlet of Hartwick, Sergeant Winslow’s hometown, as the “Sergeant John Kempe Winslow Memorial Highway”.
“Memorial highways, parks, and other landmarks serve as fitting tributes to the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our freedoms. Each time we see a veteran’s name on a sign, we should think of that individual’s valor and say thank you. Sergeant Winslow served with bravery, courage, and unwavering allegiance to his country and his fellow soldiers and is highly deserving of this special tribute,” Seward added.
The special highway designation was requested by the Town of Hartwick, Hartwick American Legion Post 1567, Cooperstown American Legion Post 579, and Cooperstown VFW Post 7128.
The legislation must still be approved by the state assembly and signed by the governor to take effect.
Companion legislation (A.6670) sponsored by Assemblyman John Salka has been introduced in the state assembly.
