Senator James Sanders Jr. Calls For Impeachment Proceedings Against President Donald Trump

Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway), today called for the U.S. House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Sanders based his decision on recent testimony by Robert Mueller, Special Counsel for the Department of Justice, and the Mueller Report.

The testimony by Mueller regarding his investigation into whether Trump or his associates colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election did not exonerate the president. Instead, it implies deceit on behalf of the president including the possibility of instructing others to lie. Six of Trump’s associates have been charged or convicted of lying about their Russia-related contacts.

“I cannot stand idly by and watch as President Trump continues to morally bankrupt this country,” Sanders said. “We need to demand more from an elected official that was chosen to run this great nation.” The NAACP also publicly announced its support for impeachment and 95 members of the House, all of them Democrats, have voted in favor of such action.

Mueller’s report confirms that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election in order to benefit Trump and that Trump knew of this help, accepted it, and asked them to help further. Then he did everything in his power to derail Mueller’s investigation, which Sanders and many others believe is an obstruction of justice.

Sanders also condemns Trump’s racist remarks throughout his presidency, most recently, and perhaps most alarmingly telling four congresswomen of color - Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib - who opposed his policies that they should “go back” to where they came from if they don’t like the United States.

“Trump’s mantra is “Make America Great Again,” but what makes America great are the very things he bashes out of ignorance,” Sanders said. “His statements, directed at four congresswomen, to go back to their country because they disagreed with his policies is misinformed and bigoted. Especially since all four are American citizens.”

“Clearly Trump’s consistent misconduct in so many areas has demonstrated his inability to hold the highest office in the land,” Sanders said. “We cannot, and must not allow, this to continue; especially since our government has avenues it can take to remove Trump from office. It is our congressional duty to protect this country.”

If impeachment proceedings are unsuccessful and result in an acquittal by the Republican-led Senate, Sanders advises that voters remove Trump from office by casting their ballots for a different candidate in 2020.
