Skoufis Announces Accelerated Completion of Route 94 and Jackson Avenue Traffic Light
Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) recently announced an accelerated completion for the installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Route 94 and Jackson Avenue in the Town of Cornwall. Initially, construction was slated for completion in the spring of 2020; it will now be finished by the start of January.
Erin Talarico, a local resident who suffered a car accident at the dangerous intersection, first reached out to Skoufis and local officials in mid-2016 in order to urge action. Skoufis immediately began working with town leaders to lobby the Department of Transportation to install a traffic light - they received a commitment to do so in mid-2017. Until funding was established, however, the project could not move forward. After identifying funding earlier this year, Skoufis and town officials pushed to have the work completed by the close of 2019 instead of the spring of 2020; Skoufis was able to recently secure this new, accelerated commitment which he says will serve to more expeditiously safeguard the town's residents.
“After hearing horror story after horror story from constituents about their experiences at this dangerous intersection, I'm delighted to report that there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Senator Skoufis. “I want to commend the DOT for agreeing to expedite this project because residents remain at risk every day that goes by. Often times, something as simple as a traffic light can act as a life-saving measure and this project is no exception, particularly at such an accident-prone intersection."
Richard Randazzo, Town of Cornwall Supervisor said, “This is great news from the Senator. Senator Skoufis has worked closely with the Town on this and we are very pleased that the traffic light at this intersection is scheduled for installation by January and will become a reality. It has been one of the most dangerous intersections in our town and the new light will greatly improve the safety for everyone.”
The traffic light installation is expected to be completed by the start of January 2020.
