Senator Thomas and Assemblyman Abinanti Introduce Legislation to Save Local News
(Garden City, NY) -- Senator Kevin Thomas (D-Levittown) introduced legislation Friday that would require cable television companies and telephone corporations to provide local news programming.
The bill (S6784) is a response to a decline in local news reporting, leaving several communities without quality coverage. Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti (D-Westchester) is sponsoring a version of the bill (A8662) in the State Assembly .
Senator Thomas said, “Our democracy depends on an informed citizenry. The loss of local news seriously hurts our communities. This legislation will help ensure that New Yorkers have access to the local news and information that impacts their health, welfare, and the communities in which they live.”
