Statement from Senator Leroy Comrie
July 30, 2019
"Confidential consumer data is more vulnerable today than ever before because of the crooked motives of hackers and the lightning speed at which new technology is emerging. Following the enormous Equifax data breach in 2017, I introduced multiple bills that would require various businesses to provide free identity theft prevention and mitigation services in the event of a data breach. Despite our success in enacting S3582, a law now requiring that credit reporting agencies implement these needed measures in the event of a data breach, my more comprehensive bill, S5721A, which would have extended such requirements to the banking industry, was unable to pass the legislature. As additional details of the Capital One data breach are reported, I am reminded of the urgent need for stronger consumer protection laws for the people of our state."
