LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. – Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris announced $10,000 in funding secured in this year’s state budget for the Growing Up Green school in Long Island City. The funding will go to support special education programs in the environmentally-focused charter school. Senator Gianaris announced the funding at the school’s curriculum night on Monday.
“Every child deserves a full range of services and quality education and I am proud this funding will help secure just that for our students in western Queens,” said Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris. “I thank the Growing Up Green team for their ongoing dedication to our community and their good work each and every day.”
"On behalf of the entire Growing Up Green School community; thank you for this generous grant. When we meet families of children with IEPs who are joining Growing Up Green, many of them express that they are coming here because of the supportive and flexible learning environment and our commitment to support students with disabilities in an inclusive setting. This grant will go towards funding for programs, tools, and supports that will benefit our students both inside and outside of the classroom and we are incredibly grateful,” said Matthew Greenberg, Founder and Executive Director, Growing up Green Charter Schools.
Senator Gianaris successfully advocated for increased funding for community priorities in this year’s state budget, including $58,000 for the Jacob Riis Neighborhood Settlement, $30,000 for the Gantry Parent Association, $13,000 for Sunnyside Community Services, $13,000 for Hunters Point Middle School, and $20,000 for Immigrant Families Together.
