Senator Gianaris Recognizes Community Leaders for Black History Month

ASTORIA, N.Y. – Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris recognized several community leaders at a ceremony honoring Black History Month held last night at Astoria Houses. Senator Gianaris, along with Council Member Costa Constantinides, and Assembly Member Catherine Nolan recognized leaders in education, law enforcement, and public housing organizing.
“These men and women make our community a better place and embody the spirit of our great civil rights leaders,” said Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris. “I thank them for their work through the years and send my best wishes for continued success.”
Those honored with citations at last night’s event include:
- Andre Smith, Zone 126 School
- Dora Danner, Principal of PS 234
- Det. Darryl Johnson, Police Service Area (PSA) 9
- Det. Latoya McLeod, PSA 9
- Jo Ann Parks, Astoria Houses Senior Center Director
- Mary Harper, Astoria Houses resident
