April 15, 2019
(Brentwood, NY) On April 12, 2019, Senator Monica R. Martinez joined County Executive Steve Bellone and other local elected officials and community members to announce and celebrate the acquisition of 27 acres of land in Brentwood. This is a part of their environmental conservation efforts that the Sisters have ingrained into their central mission, largely in reaction to Pope Francis’ push to protect the environment in 2015.
The Sisters of St. Joseph have always led the way when it comes to protecting and safeguarding our environment. From the installation of over three thousand solar panels onto their campus to their innovative waste management alternative systems, these women have dedicated their lives to enriching the Brentwood community through sensible, ecologically sound initiatives. The Sisters of St. Joseph have dedicated a portion of their grounds to resurrecting farming in Brentwood. This has brought fresh, organic produce to members of the community who may not otherwise have access to.
“During my time as a Suffolk County Legislator, I spearheaded and sponsored the legislation that helped to make this possible. The farming industry is tremendously important to the overall economic prosperity of Long Island, and it is critical we work to preserve land to ensure that we can continue to lead the way in this sector. This land is sacred, healing, and must be respected for generations to come. Thank you to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, and all of the advocates who have made this possible. ” stated Senator Martinez.
