Senator Monica R. Martinez Passes Medford Library Annex Bill
May 6, 2019
(Albany, NY) On May 6, 2019, Senator Monica R. Martinez and her colleagues in the Senate passed bill S2877, which paves the way for a new library annex that is more centrally located to the residents of Medford. This new facility will provide a book repository, meeting rooms and other services that Medford residents and library advocates have been pushing for. Currently, these same families must drive 20 to 30 minutes to get to the library on Main Street in Patchogue, often making it difficult to utilize all of the tools and resources that they have to offer.
The development of the Medford library would house children and teens' sections, meeting rooms for community groups, and space for career counseling and English-as-a-Second-Language classes, which will ultimately enrich the lives of those in the community.
“Public libraries play an essential role in providing safe, accessible, and free educational resource centers for every member in communities across the country. When you enter a library, you open your mind to endless opportunities through resources free of charge, including books, internet access, and educational and professional training programs. The residents of Medford deserve equitable access to these resources, and for that reason I was proud to champion this bill.” stated Senator Martinez.
“We are so grateful to Senator Martinez for moving this bill forward. The Medford community is now one step closer to enhanced Library services right in their neighborhood. This means increased access to materials, information, career resources, ESL classes, homework help and lots more.” Said Patchogue-Medford Library Director, Danielle Paisley.
“The Medford community is thrilled that this project is moving forward and very much appreciates Senator Martinez’s help” stated Nerina Sperl, Treasurer of Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association.
