Senator Pam Helming
April 24, 2019
WATERLOO – Senator Pam Helming recently visited Waterloo High School to recognize student-athletes from the girls varsity cross country team that won the section championship during the fall season as well as two student-athletes who won individual section championships during the winter season. She presented a New York State Senate Proclamation to the girls cross country team that won the Section V, Class C championship. She also presented Proclamations to runner Riley Corey, who won the Section V, Class C 3000m Indoor Track and Field championship, and to wrestler Jake DeWall, who won the Section V, Class BBB 285-pound Wrestling championship. Senator Helming also gave New York State Senate Citations to Cross Country Coach Ed Courtney for being named Finger Lakes Eastern Division Coach of the Year, Section V Class C Coach of the Year, and All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year and to Wrestling Coach Tyrone Thomas for being named Finger Lakes Central Coach of the Year.
“Winning a section championship is about much more than just being able to complete the course, run really fast, or pin your opponent. It takes a group of people who are willing to work together as a team and individuals who are willing to give everything they have. It takes a tremendous amount of diligence and persistence. It also takes a tremendous amount of commitment and determination, especially at the high school level, with homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, and other obligations along with practices and matches. A championship is something that is truly earned by every team member and every individual, not something handed to them. The entire Waterloo Indians girls cross country team, as well as Riley and Jake, should be proud of their championships, and Coach Courtney and Coach Thomas should be proud of their contributions as well. They also made their school proud, their community proud, and our entire region proud. It was a privilege to honor these outstanding student-athletes and coaches, and I wish them much success next season and beyond,” Senator Helming said.
