ALBANY – Senator Pam Helming proudly celebrated Palmyra-Macedon High School student and Red Raiders wrestler Jace Schafer at the State Capitol Wednesday, May 22 for winning the NYSPHSAA Division II 99-pound state championship. She welcomed Jace to the New York State Senate Chamber, along with Coach John Burgess and Athletic Director Tom Schmandt, and sponsored a resolution to honor the state champion. Senator Helming offered remarks in which she congratulated the wrestler and his school and acknowledged the athlete’s commitment, dedication, and sacrifice to win the title.

“The legendary football coach Vince Lombardi said, ‘If we chase perfection, we can catch excellence,’ and excellence is exactly what the Palmyra-Macedon High School wrestler Jace Schafer accomplished this season. Jace compiled a 55-3 record during the season, losing just three of his matches all year on his way to defeating Newfane’s Andy Lucinski by a 2-0 decision in the first-place match to claim the state championship. Competing on the mat as an individual, Jace was nevertheless a part of a team; he had to rely on his teammates and they had to rely on him, as they built each other up as members of a successful organization. It takes a special commitment, a special sacrifice, and a special belief in oneself to achieve greatness and success at the highest level. Under the guidance of Coach Burgess and Ahtletic Director Schmandt, Jace showed that he has what it takes – the right mix of character and leadership – to succeed in his pursuits and achieve great things. As a state champion, Jace serves as role models for his peers – on the mat, in the classroom, and elsewhere in life – and will forever represent a spirit of excellence in the Palmyra-Macedon community. Congratulations to Jace, Coach Burgess, Athletic Director Schmandt, and the entire Red Raiders family,” Senator Helming said.
