Petition Launched to Oppose Closing of Livingston Correctional Facility

Senator Patrick Gallivan is urging citizens opposed to the decision by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to close the Livingston Correctional Facility to consider signing a petition launched by Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes.

"It is unfortunate that the administration is moving ahead with plans to close facilities while still allowing thousands of inmates to be housed in double bunks," Senator Gallivan said.  "If truly concerned about maintaining a safe environment for those who work and live inside our correctional facilities, we would end the practice of double bunking before we look to close prisons."

Senator Gallivan has advocated for an end to double bunking and has introduced legislation to prohibit it.

Senator Gallivan and Assemblywomen Byrnes will be meeting with the DOCCS Commissioner in the near future in an effort to reverse this decision.

Senator Gallivan will work with DOCCS and the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA), AFSCME, CSEA and PEF to ensure the best possible outcome for all those affected.
