Senator Gallivan Joins Greater Niagara Frontier Council in Honoring Fallen Eagle Scout from Eden

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan presented a New York State flag to the family of Fallen Eagle Scout and U.S. Army Captain John J. Levulis in a ceremony on Saturday at the Richard E. Garman Scouting Service Center in Buffalo.

Congressman Chris Collins joined Senator Gallivan in presenting flags that have flown over the United States Capitol and the New York State Capitol, respectively. The Greater Niagara Frontier Council also unveiled the National Eagle Scout Association Fallen Eagle Scout Statue, commemorating both the Eagle Scout Rank and the US Army Rank of Captain Levulis. The memorial statue will be in the permanent collection of the Scouting Museum at Garman Scouting Center.

U.S. Army Captain John J. Levulis received numerous awards and medals, including the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Campaign Medal, Airborne Wings and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was an infantry platoon leader in Afghanistan. Captain Levulis was traveling in a Humvee convoy from Fort Drum to Fort Dix, when a car struck the rear of the military vehicle. Captain Levulis died several days after injuries sustained in the crash on May 7, 2015.

“Captain Levulis served our community and our country as a Boy Scout, as a member of the ROTC at Niagara University and as a platoon leader with the 10^th Mountain Division in Afghanistan,” Senator Gallivan said.  “His spirt of service and dedication is reflected by the foundation created in his name, which continues to support our veterans and the Eden community which he loved so much.  We thank Captain Levulis for his service and for being a role model for others.”

“Captain Levulis gave the ultimate sacrifice serving our country. His legacy of service and leadership will endure,” said Congressman Collins. “The legacy of service that Captain Levulis began in his life continues through The Captain John J. Levulis Memorial Foundation, supporting the Hometown Heroes Project that honors veterans and current service members with banners along Eden's main streets.”

“As an Eagle Scout and a US Army Captain, John embraced the highest ideals of leadership. We are honored for the opportunity to commemorate his life and service to our nation,” said Russell Etzenhouser, Scout Executive of the Greater Niagara Frontier Council.
