Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) is urging his Legislature colleagues to maintain in this year’s state budget the tax credit program that attracts film and television producers to work in Buffalo, Western New York and the Upstate region. The program is credited with helping to bring several movie and TV productions to the area over the past several years, including a film currently being made in East Aurora.
“The film tax credit has had a significant impact on the number of productions being shot across Upstate New York, projects that would otherwise be filmed in New York City or elsewhere in the country,” Senator Gallivan said. “These productions support the local economy, create jobs and help promote the region.
Film production companies may be eligible to receive a tax credit for qualified production costs incurred in New York State and additional credits for post-production costs if incurred in Upstate New York. Additional credits may also be available for labor expenses.
The Buffalo Niagara Film Commission says over the past several years more than 25 films and TV shows have shot all or portions of their productions in the Buffalo area. These projects have had an estimated $60-million impact on the local economy and have employed more than 2,500 people.
Earlier this week a Christmas themed movie began production in the Village of East Aurora, the second in recent years to be filmed in the community by director Fred Olen Ray.
“As negotiations on a new state budget continue, I urge the Legislature to ensure this valuable program be extended,” Senator Gallivan said.
